Selfies
a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.

I don't usually take selfies as it is not an important thing in my life. I think the main reason selfies have become so popular are because you can document your life and share your selfies with your friends. When taking a selfie you should thing of the angle that you are taking it at, if there is good lighting and the framing of the photo💡.
In the photo by Lee Friedlander I can see a silhouette of a man in the reflection of a window but he is also holding a mirror which is showing the silhouette. Friendlander's photograph is a kind of mirror selfie because you can see his reflection of him taking the photo . This is similar to other selfies as it captures him taking the photo and shows the area around him but is also different as it has no colour and doesn't actually show himself but his reflection.
The framing of the photograph is nice as it gives more context to the photo and makes it more interesting as you can see the cars and the buildings in the background but your eyes are drawn back to the person taking it. |
In the photo by Francesca Woodman, you can see a big mirror and two people hiding behind something in the reflection but you can see part of the person in the mirror. Woodman's photograph is a kind of mirror selfie because they are using a mirror to capture the selfie of herself. Woodman's image is a bit puzzling because you can't really see what it going on the photo. Their selfie is different from other selfies as they are only showing a bit of herself instead of showing their face.
The framing of this photograph is nice as you mainly focus on the mirror as it has it's on frame but you can also look around it to see the background of it and it allows for the natural light to come in making the photo more bright. |
In the photo by Kenneth Josephson, you can see a car with a man holding a cutout square of a paper with a hand through it to show the subject of the photo. You can also see the shadow of the man taking the photo. Josephson's photograph is a kind of disguised selfie because you can see Josephson's shadow taking the photo but in the centre of the photograph you can see someones hand.
The framing of this photograph is interesting as it shows a bit of whats going on in the background but focuses in the middle of it. This gives the photo more character and more context to whats happening and where the photograph is taken. I appreciate Josephson's image the most because it is very interesting to look at as there is lots happening in the photograph and the more you look at the photo the more you can find out about it. |
These photographs were the most successful. as they are more interesting to look at. In the top right the painting is reflecting me which makes the photo more interesting to look at as there is a lot happening in it. In some of the images the mirror is bent which makes me be reflected at angle which makes it more interesting to look at than just a normal selfie. In the bottom right selfie i am being reflected onto a phone, this gives the photo a subject to look at but the background of the photo gives a contrast between the phone and the floor. The image in the middle is nice at the colours in the background make the centre pop out more and it also has leading lines to pull your eyes to the centre of the image. As well as the mirror being used gives a nice effect on the background and me.

When making this exhibition we collaborated as a team and made thoughtful decisions when categorising them. I think the exhibition does make sense as they fit well with the groups and all the photos look spaced apart and aren't all cluttered together. I think i found most challenging is the title of the exhibition .
Obscured photograph
These photos were taken by partially hiding their face. In the first photograph he threw sand in the air and took a picture at the perfect time to not show his face in the photograph. In the second photo he went partially under water and took a photo to disguise his face in the picture.
Afterwards i took my own obscured photos 🙈

Hans Peter Feldman
In these photos by Hans Peter Feldman, he took photos of what people carry inside their handbags. It shows what people always carry with them and what they use everyday 🚰🍬📖.
I then took photos of what i carry inside my bag, inspired by his work. 👀

Masked selfies
These photos are masked photos as they put something in front of their face to disguise their face by putting a mask in front of it to look like someone else in the selfie. For example, you can put something in front of you face to not show the facial features but still make it look like a selfie or put a mask on to act like someone else.
Francesca Woodman
In the image on the left you can see a piece of clothing moving through the air. This is a self portrait as it represents someone taking a photo without there actually being a person in the photograph. The camera was placing in front of a doorway which gives makes the viewers eyes go the middle of the photo but also the background makes the photo more interesting. The composition of the photo is interesting as the item is in the air, this means there photographer had to take the photo at the perfect time to make it appear as if it is floating. The lighting in the photo is coming from a window outside of the framing, it is using natural lighting coming from the left of the photo.
In the photo on the right you can see a person taking a selfie but you can't see the persons face. This is a self portrait as they are taking a photo of them self but instead it is more about them taking the selfie than the person in the photo. The photographer took the image by putting their camera on a stand a putting a mirror in front. The composition of the photo is interesting as there are lots of broken parts around the floor. There is natural lighting in the photograph coming from the right of the image.

After looking at the photos we had to try and create photos inspired by them.
Inspired by the work of Francesca Woodman, Hélène Amouzou creates her own distinctive and haunting imagery.
- Amouzou was born it Togo but now works in belgium
- The photographs were taken during a two year period when Amouzou was seeking asylum there
- She works with film rather than digital media
- These photographs reveal a constant questioning and search for the subject’s identity
- She captures herself or her belongings (often her clothes)
These photos show a faded person in different positions, in the left you can see them sitting in a suitcase and on the right you can see them standing inside of it. This is interesting as you can see through the person, this gives the feeling of them being there without it being a selfie. This is similar to Woodman's as they are taking a selfie without actually revealing them.
