Disguise
In this picture I can see a coat hanging on a chair with a pair of hands on top of it and also part of a face scribbled above the coat. The background is plain white with a pillar and a piece of wood on the side of it. The use of the head being partly drawn on draws your focus to the the centre of the picture and also makes your eyes look around the picture to try and understand it. It is a bright picture with lots of light colours being used but the black behind the hands helps to contrast it. This pictu?/re is a portrait but it's an unusual portrait because it isn't a straight forward picture of a person but a picture of an empty coat with someone edited on, but parts of them missing. You can tell that there is a face in the picture because of the main features but it's hard to make out a shape for the head. Portraiture is usually a picture of a person, with just their face or their whole body; this photograph follows the rules of portraiture while also making it different from other portraiture photos and making it interesting to look at.
I think Lucas Blalock created this image by settings up a chair and a single coat over it. Then taking a photo of it, thinking about the background of the image and the angle it was taken at. He then used the photoshop to edit a some arms over the coat to create the illusion of person sitting there but without using a body, he also draws a face above the coat to act as a person but he does this without using the main facial features so that the viewer has to try and fill in a face with their imagination. The gaps in the face also helps to try and disguise the persons face.
This picture makes me feel befuddled and perplexed because it's hard to tell what is going on inside of the photograph and how the photographer has done it. It also makes me feel uneasy as even though there aren’t eyes in the image, it makes you feel as if it is staring at you and also even without a body or facial features, it's like it is still showing emotion throughs the use of the hands and the leaning back position of the coat. If i could ask Lucas Blalock a questions, I would ask what inspired him to take this photograph?
From looking at his other work, I can tell that he has other photographs with drawn on parts to it and that he likes to edit his images in mysterious ways to disguise the main focus of the photograph and making it more appealing to look at as it makes you wonder whats happening inside the photo. I can also the tell that his photos don't have a goal to it, to show or present an idea but it looks like he is just having fun with his images and just making interesting photos to appreciate.
This photo relates the theme of disguise very well as it presents a person sitting on a chair, but it does this without showing anyone inside the photo and disguising them as just a coat on a chair. Also the use of the drawn on face helps to further portray the theme of disguise as it shows someone is there without using someones actual face, which helps to disguise them.

Response
This is my response to Lucas Blalock's photo. I made this photo by taking a picture of an empty coat on a chair and then putting that photo on photoshop where I got a painting of a face and randomly scribbled it on to try and match his. I then got a photo of a pair of hands and put that on top to try to replicate his but also to make the photo more interesting to look at and make it stand out more. I also edited a painted nose to try and make the face appear a bit fuller and also make the viewer stare at the photo to try and understand what's happening inside of it. I didn't want to make the background of the photo complicated, so I just used a plain white wall which compliments the the coat and makes the face appear brighter and stand out more. I also kept the background simple to not take away from the center of the photo.
